Giving consumers choice

The job of the OFT is to make sure that consumers have as much choice as possible across all the different sectors of the marketplace. When consumers have choice they have genuine and enduring power.

As an independent professional organisation, the OFT plays a leading role in promoting and protecting consumer interests throughout the UK, while ensuring that businesses are fair and competitive. In order to do this, the OFT has a number of tools granted to it under consumer and competition legislation.

Consumer Direct is a telephone and online consumer advice service operated by the OFT, and delivered in partnership with Local Authority Trading Standards Services.

Consumer Direct’s job is to offer clear, practical advice to consumers on anything from a £30 pair of shoes to a £30,000 home improvement.

The information and intelligence collected by Consumer Direct is then used to inform and focus the resources and work of the OFT and Local Authority Trading Standards Services.
